It is a full freezer unit. The system is up and running rather than a dead unit somebody gave up on, and that is worth saying out loud, because a refrigerated van with a seized system is an expensive thing to inherit. A freezer van will run as a chiller any day you want it to, just by dialing the setpoint up, so you can haul produce, dairy and flowers one week and frozen product the next off the same van. A chiller van cannot do the reverse at any price. If you are in frozen distribution, ice cream, seafood, frozen meal delivery or anything that has to stay hard frozen through an Ottawa July, this is the spec you need and it is the harder one to find on a used van. GAH is a British transport refrigeration manufacturer with more than twenty five years behind them, and their systems are what a lot of supermarket and home delivery fleets run. This is a single zone box, so the whole cargo area runs at one temperature, and the control panel in the cab sets it and holds it. The evaporator is a twin fan unit mounted up at the front bulkhead, out of the way of your load. The other thing worth paying attention to is the electric standby. Plenty of refrigerated vans do not have it, and on a freezer van it matters even more. Standby means you can plug the van in at the shop and the box will hold temperature with the engine shut off, so you can load the night before and pull out in the morning with everything already down where you want it, instead of sitting in the yard idling and burning fuel while the box catches up. It also means you are not running the engine to keep a load frozen while you are parked. Under the hood is the 3.5L Ti-VCT V6, the naturally aspirated one rather than the EcoBoost, with an automatic driving the rear wheels. Simpler engine, fewer things to go wrong than a twin-turbo, and rear-wheel drive is what you want under a van that spends its life loaded. The kilometers are on the higher side for a 2023, and we are not going to dress that up. What you are really buying here is the refrigeration. The Transit shape is what makes it work. A tall square box on a long wheelbase means shelving and stacked totes go in without fighting curved walls, and the medium roof gives you working height inside without turning the van into a sail on the 417 or making it a problem in a parking garage. One thing to be straight about: an insulated freezer box takes up more room and more payload than a chiller box would, because the walls are thicker. That is the trade you make for the temperature and it is worth knowing going in. Worth saying plainly, because it is the whole story on this one. Converting a cargo van to freezer spec properly means the unit itself, thicker insulation through the roof, walls and doors, a floor that can take being washed down, the standby wiring, and the install labor on top of all of it. Freezer conversions cost more than chiller conversions for exactly that reason. Add that to a van you already own and you are into it for a serious number before you have driven anywhere. That work is already done here and it is already in the van, which is why this one does not read like an ordinary high-kilometer Transit and should not be shopped against one.
